Don't we all miss travel like crazy?

2020 will be forever remembered as "the year of no travel" and all we want is to put this memory behind us, and 'hit the road'.

While we can't wait to take that family vacation we planned over a year ago, go visit long-distance relatives or friends, feel the excitement of a jet taking off, or just watch the sun sets (or rises) in some exotic resort, as the world slowly returns to normal, we should not forget about planet earth and our commitment to the environment, and be more conscious about our travel habits.

Especially, now that more and more countries are re-opening their borders for travelers and as we see less restrictions on travel and mobility, traveling sustainably is becoming an urging need.

To hands throwing an Earth ball up in the air

This week marks Earth Day which is celebrated by millions of people around the world who care and want to show their support for the environment, highlighting the urgent action we all should take to save the planet.

The theme for this year's Earth Day is "Restore Our Earth", which focuses not only on the need to reduce our impact on the planet as we recover from the effects of Covid-19, but also how we can play a role in repairing the damage we’ve done.

Now, we know, all you want to do is travel as further as possible from home. Enough with the lockdown, right? We hear you!

For those who want to see the world, there are plenty of ways to make their trips more sustainable, by simply choosing where to go, what to pack and how to get there.

Eager to travel again but want to ensure you play your role in sustainable travel? Want to get around ecologically?

Here are some helpful tips that will turn you into a sustainable travel hero:

#1 CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE DESTINATIONS & ACCOMMODATIONS - You'll be surprised how many cities, islands and resorts are taking part in the global effort to save the earth! From Slovenia to Spain, Palau to Hawaii  – local governments show their commitment to protecting natural resources, people and heritage; and reduced energy consumption, allow more convenient and available public transport, protect green areas and save waste water.

Use an eco-friendly booking site for your accommodation (like and opt-out for an "eco-conscious" hotel. An eco-friendly hotel does not mean compromising on your comfort and splurge! There are plenty of “green” and “eco” hotels that take simple measures to balance comfort accommodation with sustainability.

#2 PACK SMART & LIGHT AND SAVE ON GAS - We are often tempted to bring our entire wardrobe with us on a trip. No matter long or short. But keep in mind that with every extra Kilos of baggage in your car, your fuel efficiency goes down. Not to mention, over-weight baggage also impacts the fuel efficiency of an airplane, which results in over-weight penalty by the airline.

Packing light will help you save money and help save the environment. Try packing smart and bring only the essential items you need.

(Not sure how? SWAGGER offers a variety of travel products to help you travel smart, from Packing Cubes and Toiletry Bags, to Silk Sleep Masks and Warm Shawls, feel free to visit our shop. Or, join our mailing list for a free copy of our "Ultimate Guide to Packing Smart".)

#3 EAT LOCALLY - When you eat local foods and at local restaurants, you support the community you’re visiting. Also, eating locally sourced foods means your food ingredients didn't have to travel far to reach your plate. Saving on carbon footprint, remember?

#4 BRING YOUR OWN TRAVEL MUG/WATER BOTTLE Avoid using single-used plastics and bring your own reusable water bottle, even containers and bags.

#5 USE TOILETRIES THAT DON'T HARM THE ENVIRONMENT - Ideally, you should travel with your own toiletries to reduce the single use of those little plastic bottles offered by the hotel. They are environmental disaster. Try using biodegradable soaps and bodywash liquids that break down quickly and organically in the shower.

Use mineral-based reef-safe sunscreens, as regular sun creams contain oxybenzone and octinoxate that pollutes the ecosystem and contributes to coral bleaching.

#6 TRAVEL SLOW - Consider swapping planes for trains on your next travel adventure.
Trains may still have environmental impacts, but apparently, they are significantly less harmful compared with airplanes. Railway companies are making efforts to operate  electrifying lines and replace diesel trains with quieter, cleaner engines.

Traveling by train may take more time but consider this – you get to see beautiful views and meet people throughout the trip. The experience is completely different and while you're at it, you're also making a small gesture to help save the planet.

#7 BRING YOUR OWN AIR TRAVEL ESSENTIALS - Traveling by air after all?Bring your own flight essentials on board. You'll be amazed how much cabin waste airlines generate! Avoid the plastic-wrapped blankets, eye masks and headphones and bring your own travel essentials.

Try SWAGGER's Warm Shawl Wrap & Sleep Masks, using only cruelty-free materials.

And, since you've taken your own water bottle, ask the cabin crew to fill it up instead of using disposable cups.
